Separating Fire, Earth, and Fluff: A Fifty-Year Reality Check
I live in a cave. That’s not a metaphor I reach for to sound rugged… it’s simply where I sleep, and it means I’ve spent a fair few evenings watching the sky do something dramatic over the hills while a WhatsApp group somewhere insists the planet is actively dying, mid-collapse, right now, this week. Every few weeks the internet finds a new apocalypse to perform. Footage of a crumbling façade here, a horizon the colour of a bruise there, and suddenly everyone’s an amateur seismologist with strong opinions about the end times.
So let’s do something unfashionable. Let’s put the phone down, make a coffee, and actually look at the numbers behind the three disasters that get wheeled out most often: earthquakes, wildfires, and the climate itself. Fifty years of data. Not vibes. And what you find, once you strip the hysteria off it, is three entirely different stories wearing the same panicked coat.
The Ground Isn’t Getting Angrier. You’re Just Watching More Closely.
Here’s the one that tends to surprise people most. If you feel, in your bones, that big earthquakes are happening more often than they did when your parents were young, I promise you it isn’t the tectonic plates that have changed. It’s your access to information.
The U.S. Geological Survey, along with the British Geological Survey, has been logging this for decades, and the number holds astonishingly steady… somewhere around 15 to 16 major earthquakes (magnitude 7.0 or above) every single year. Some years give you twenty. Some years give you six. That’s not a trend. That’s just noise, the planet doing what it’s always done, indifferent to our news cycles.
What’s actually shifted is us. Fifty years ago a tremor out in some forgotten stretch of desert would rattle a few goats and vanish into history unrecorded. Now we’ve got tens of thousands of digital seismometers listening for the faintest shiver, and millions more people building their homes directly on top of fault lines because that’s where the affordable land was. So when the ground does move, it’s got infrastructure to rattle and a smartphone to film it happening.
The Earth hasn’t got angrier. We’ve just built closer to it and pointed more cameras at the consequences.
Wildfires: A Paradox Wearing Two Different Faces
This is the one that trips people up, because depending on where you’re standing, both “wildfires are worse than ever” and “wildfires have actually declined” are simultaneously true, and neither side of that argument is lying to you.
Zoom out to a global scale, and total burned area has actually dropped, somewhere in the region of 15 to 20% over recent decades. Global Forest Watch tracks this via satellite, and the reason is fairly unglamorous… vast tracts of savanna and brushland across Sub-Saharan Africa and South America are increasingly cleared for farmland or managed differently, which means fewer of the low-intensity seasonal burns that used to sweep across the grasslands each year.
But here’s the gigantic, uncomfortable “however.” While total acreage burned has gone down, the ferocity of the fires that remain has gone distinctly, terrifyingly up. Hotter and drier summers are turning mature forests across North America, Southern Europe, Australia, and Siberia into something closer to kindling stacked and waiting. Research hosted through Global Forest Watch’s fire monitoring platform shows stand-replacing canopy fires… the kind that don’t just scorch but obliterate entire ecosystems and, increasingly, towns… have intensified dramatically.
So we’re burning less grass and a lot more ancient forest. Less quantity, catastrophically more consequence. That’s not a contradiction. That’s just what happens when you take a system already under strain and turn the temperature dial up for fifty straight years.
The One Story With No Nuance Left to Hide Behind
Earthquakes gave us a flatline dressed up as chaos. Wildfires gave us a genuine paradox. Climate gives us neither the comfort of stability nor the mercy of complexity. It just gives you a straight, unambiguous line heading in one direction.
According to long-term datasets from NOAA and NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, the rate of global warming since the mid-1970s has climbed to roughly 0.20°C per decade, more than three times the pace recorded across the previous hundred years. We’re sitting somewhere around 0.9°C to 1.0°C warmer today than we were in 1976. The last ten years are, in recorded history, the ten warmest ever measured.
I’ve felt versions of this with my own skin, not as an abstraction on a graph but as sweat on the back of my neck… duty in places that don’t forgive you for underestimating them, winters in Norway that used to mean something they no longer quite mean, summers here in Spain that arrive earlier and refuse to loosen their grip. Shifting a planet’s average temperature by a full degree takes an obscene, almost unimaginable amount of energy. That shift has now happened within a single ordinary human lifetime. Somebody’s, anyway. Possibly yours.
So What Do We Actually Do With This?
Nothing about this is an invitation to relax. But it isn’t an invitation to doom-scroll yourself into paralysis either. The ground beneath you is behaving exactly as it always has… it’s your exposure to it, and your awareness of it, that’s changed beyond recognition. The wildfires torching your newsfeed are fewer in number but savage in a way your grandparents never had to reckon with. And the heat, the heat is real, it’s accelerating, and it doesn’t care how many memes get made about it.
Knowing which of these levers is actually moving, and which one’s just noise dressed up as crisis, is the difference between preparing sensibly and panicking pointlessly. Worth remembering next time someone insists the sky is falling on all fronts at once. Sometimes it’s genuinely on fire. Sometimes it’s just louder than it used to be.
